Prevention Starts at Home

This April 25, drop off your unused medications at a free collection site near you. No ID. No appointment. No questions asked.

WHY IT MATTERS

Most unused prescription medications never get disposed of — they sit in medicine cabinets, where they can be misused or accidentally accessed. One trip changes that.

Communities across Pennsylvania are taking this step together. Yours can too.

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Gather any unused or expired medications from your home.
  2. Find a free collection site near you using the location finder above.
  3. Drop them off on Saturday, April 25 between 10am and 2pm. That’s it.

Free. Anonymous. No ID required.

WHAT YOU CAN BRING

✓ Prescription pills, patches, and capsules

✓ Over-the-counter medications

✓ Pet medications

✓ Vaping devices and cartridges (remove lithium batteries first)

✗ Syringes or sharps ✗ Illicit drugs ✗ Liquid medications (unless sealed in original container)

For year-round disposal options, the PA Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP) maintains a searchable database of permanent medication drop boxes across Pennsylvania.

YEAR-ROUND DISPOSAL

  • Many local pharmacies, hospitals, and police departments have permanent drop boxes available year-round.
  • Check with your local Drug and Alcohol Agency or community coalition for programs in your area.
  • Some medications can be safely flushed — check the FDA’s flush list before doing so.
  • For trash disposal: remove medications from original containers, mix with an undesirable substance like coffee grounds or kitty litter, seal in a bag, and dispose in household trash. Scratch out personal information on the label first.
